Date Posted: Nov. 27, 2006

General Duties/Description:

As a member of the MSGPP (www.sgpp.org) Protein Lab, the research scientist will clone, express, and purify proteins for x-ray crystallography, structure determination, and biochemical assay. These proteins are potential drug targets against pathogenic protozoa (the causative agents of Malaria, African Sleeping Sickness, Chagas' Disease, Leishmaniasis, Toxoplasmosis, and Giardia to name a few).

The Research Consultant in this position will be involved in contributing to the development of a comprehensive structural genomics database. The position will play a major role in the Informatics unit of the Structural Genomics of Pathogenic Protozoa (SGPP) consortium, in particular, the area of databases for sample preparation including protein expression, purification and crystallization. SGPP aims to solve the protein structures of paratsites responsible for malaria, sleeping sickness and other diseases.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry or other related field, and at least one year of laboratory experience.

Additional Requirements:
  • Molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation/manipulation, PCR, sequencing, electrophoresis.

  • A high level of motivation, good organizational skills and the ability to work as a member of a team.

Desired:

  • Experience with High Throughput methods including 96-well format and multi-channel pipettes.
  • Experience with laboratory automation and robotics, especially liquid handling systems.
  • Familiarity with database software (SQL, Access, or ISIS).
  • Protein expression and purification techniques including the use of sonication, size exclusion and ion exchange chromatography systems.
  • Biochemical assay development.
  • Software proficiencies including MS Excel, Graphpad, and Vector NTI.

Condition of Employment: Must be willing to work occasional weekend and/or evening hours.
